Klytemnestra Triumphant

I have long admired the myths surrounding the House of Atreus from Greek Mythology. Such a brutal family with a hideous curse, Klytemnestra stands out to me in particular, especially her treatment in literature and the arts. I consider her to be much maligned and her plight under-estimated. Here she is shown after her first and final meeting with her husband, Agamemnon follwoing his return from Troy.

Inspired by the opera Parsifal by Richard Wagner. While not strictly Parsifal himself, I have been dreaming of doing a self-portrait like this for some time now. It is meant as a companion piece of sorts, to Brunnhilde, Heilige Braut, different opera I know but I wanted a similar feel for this image.

The Swan Knight

Lohengrin's entrance must be one of the most brilliant in all of opera. Arriving on a barque lead by a swan on a golden chain to the most serene music, it truly is exquisite. Here I wanted to evoke a dreamy atmosphere, one of stillness broken only by the appearance of the Knight. The best description of this scene however, must surely come from the libretto itself.

Elsa: In splendid, shining armour

a knight approached,

a man of such pure virtue

as I had never seen before:
a golden horn at his side,
leaning on a sword -
thus he appeared to me
from nowhere, this warrior true;
with kindly gestures
he gave me comfort;
I will wait for the knight,
he shall be my champion!

And then:

Chorus: Behold! Behold! What strange and wonderous things is this? A swan?

A swan is pulling a barque towards us!

A knight is standing upright in it!

How his armour shines! The eye is dazzled
by such splendour! Behold, he is coming ever closer!
The swan is pulling on a golden chain!

Salome has been a story that has influenced many artists, writers, performers and musicians over nearly two millennia. She has long been a favourite subject of mine, as anyone who knows me will testify. This is my homage to the legend, and all those from whom it has inspired great works of art.

One of the most evocative and beautiful pieces of twentieth century music would have to be Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. Based on the poem by Stephane Mallarme it portrays perfectly the afternoon musings of an inebriated faun, drunk on wine and the prospects of love!

Too bad! to the happiness of others will lead me

Their tresses tied to the horns on my forehead:

The iconography of St Sebastian has long been a source of fascination for this artist. This is an homage to those great artists who, like me, have found inspiration in the somewhat sado-masochistic, homoerotic qualities expressed in his depiction; from Caravaggio, Sodoma, and Titian, through to Dali, Jarman and Pierre et Gilles .

This is the second time I have painted St Sebastian, and I dare say it will be a theme I doubt I will ever tire of painting or viewing.

The Sorceress

This is a tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini and his designer Piero Tosi, who designed the late directors' Medea, starring Maria Callas.

I have always been captivated by the barbarity of his designs, especially the contrast between jewellery and fabrics, not to mention the different textures.

His depiction of Greece is far from the civilised classical images we have become accostomed to, and evoke impressions of pre-Achaean times, where superstition and human sacrifice were still observed.

This is the beginning of a series currently under development, the intention being to contrast the richness of the character and surrounds with the single hideous purpose of her actions: to maintain order in a world filled with chaos and violence, and invoke the rites of fertility.
